The prepackaged magnesium anode is a combination of a cast magnesium anode placed at the center of a cloth bag filled with a highly hygroscopic backfill mixture. The backfill includes 75% gypsum, 20% bentonite, and 5% sodium sulfate. Usually, this setup is then securely enclosed in a plastic or paper outer lining for transportation purposes, which should be removed before installation.
The efficiency of an anode can be significantly improved when it is pre-packaged with this depolarizing backfill. This special mixture helps reduce the resistance between the anode and soil, making it easier for electrical current to reach the intended structure.
Our magnesium anode is assembled with the cable and joints sealed using epoxy resin. These prepackaged magnesium anodes are designed to meet the rapid and high-efficiency demands of engineering projects. They are commonly used for protecting buried metallic structures in various soil resistivities, such as pipelines, underground tanks, external tank bases, and similar structures.
Special magnesium alloyed anodes have been specifically engineered for use in buried applications. These anodes are particularly effective for structures buried in soil with resistivities that exceed 2,000 ohm-cm due to their high driving voltage. To further improve their efficiency, the anodes are pre-packaged in a specially formulated backfill. This backfill is designed to reduce the anode-to-soil resistance, thereby facilitating the flow of current to the intended structure.
The added backfill helps to decrease the electrical resistance of the anode to the ground as well as retain moisture which allows for better efficiency and homogeneous consumption of the anode, thus creating an efficient anode bed. This simplifies the on-site construction process, as some processes which traditionally took place on site (such as backfilling) are carried out in the factory prior to delivery, making for a convenient and fast installation. This helps to ensure the construction and installation quality of the anode ground bed remain consistent.
Our standard lead cable is 10ft. AWG #12 Solid THHN/THWN. Other options include PVC/PVC, XLPE/PVC, HMWPE or TW, which can be supplied in custom sizes, lengths and colors upon request. The cable can be connected by direct brazing, mechanical fastening or welding to ensure high pull strength and low connection resistance.
