The prepackaged magnesium anode is a convenient solution that consists of a cast magnesium anode enclosed in a cloth bag filled with a highly hygroscopic backfill. This backfill mixture includes 75% gypsum, 20% bentonite, and 5% sodium sulfate.
Typically, this assembly is further protected by being wrapped in a plastic or paper outer lining for shipping purposes. It is important to remove this outer layer before installation to ensure proper functioning.
Enhanced efficiency of the anode is achieved when pre-packaged with this depolarizing backfill. The specialized mixture helps to reduce anode-to-soil resistance, facilitating the smooth flow of electrical current to the designated structure.
Our magnesium anode is meticulously assembled with the cable and joints encased in epoxy resin. Designed to meet the demanding requirements of engineering projects, these prepackaged magnesium anodes are commonly utilized for cathodic protection of buried metallic structures, including pipelines, underground tanks, external tank bases, and similar structures, across various soil resistivities.
Magnesium alloyed anodes are specifically engineered for use in buried applications. Their elevated driving voltage makes them particularly suitable for structures that are buried in soil with resistivities exceeding 2,000 ohm-cm. The effectiveness of these anodes is amplified by the fact that they are pre-encased in a specially crafted backfill material. This backfill serves to reduce the anode-to-soil resistance, thereby facilitating smoother current transmission to the desired structure.
The added backfill helps to decrease the electrical resistance of the anode to the ground as well as retain moisture which allows for better efficiency and homogeneous consumption of the anode, thus creating an efficient anode bed. Our backfill is prepared with naturally degradable and recyclable materials in the following weight ratio:

The prepackaged magnesium anode is appropriate for direct burial. This simplifies the on-site construction process, as some processes which traditionally took place on site (such as backfilling) are carried out in the factory prior to delivery, making for a convenient and fast installation. This helps to ensure the construction and installation quality of the anode ground bed remain consistent.
Our standard lead cable is 10ft. AWG #12 Solid THHN/THWN. Other options include PVC/PVC, XLPE/PVC, HMWPE or TW, which can be supplied in custom sizes, lengths and colors upon request. The cable can be connected by direct brazing, mechanical fastening or welding to ensure high pull strength and low connection resistance.
